So we have a new president. I swear she could be coming off an armed robbery conviction and still be as well recieved.

I am working on the "Thames greatest hits" this week. If you are new to campus you might not know what the rest of us have been through. I remember several people mentioning in classes "What are these impeach thames stickers I see everywhere?"

I have seen several uniformed idiots comment in the local media about "lazy liberal professors". I can only assume they never went to school here or they graduated under McCain.

Either way, my article aims to educate.

The Student Printz is hiring for the position of Executive Editor.

Only two people have applied so far. So, please, I beg of you, either apply for the job or tell someone who you think would be good at it to do it.

This job is a tremendous resume builder and opens a lot of doors for you. The pay is OK, but the experience and the networking you get is monumental. Also, it makes it possible to skip one of the two internships a person typically needs to get hired these days.

Anyone from any discipline can apply - math majors, political science, dance, etc.

The deadline for application is April 11.

To apply you must submit to Dave Davies the following:

1. A resume
2. Three letters of recommendation
3. A formal letter of application
4. A statement of intent that outlines a) Your philosophy and goals for the paper b) A plan to carry out those goals c) An evaluation of the 2005-2006 Student Printz
5. A complete transcript of your college work

You also must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be a student at USM.

If you apply, you then must attend an interview in front of the publications board of USM on April 20.

Hey everybody, thought I'd put in my thoughts for the week.
Sports are wrapping up in places and are getting started in others.

Basketball is currently playing in the opening round of the Conference USA tournament. As this sentence is being written, Southern Miss is ahead of SMU by a score of 28 to 19 with 6:55 left in the 1st half. This could be a good springboard for next year. Of course, being the optimist I am, I think we are going to win the tournament and advance to the Dance. Oops, 28-21. I'll be proven wrong most likely, but that's ok. There's always next season. And who knows, maybe a close loss to Memphis in the Final would earn us an NIT berth. You never know.

Baseball had a very impressive outing from Mississippi's reigning Mr. Baseball, Todd McInnis. He threw a 1-hitter in 8.0 innings pitched. Southern Miss shutout Bama for the third time in history. 28-23 in basketball now. We won last night 5-0. We are currently 11-2, a mighty great start to the season.

In other baseball news, Southern Miss is ranked 26th and 27th in current weekly polls. But more importantly, we hold the number 1 RPI in the nation. 30-24 Eagles. The RPI is one of the most important stats in all of college sports. I'm trying to work out a Student Printz version of the RPIs. I know the formula, its just a process getting all the records into a database. I think it would be cool, but I don't know how that would go.

We have an important series at LSU this weekend. 2-1 weekend would be nice, 3-0 would be better. I think our pitching is doing extremely well. We need to warm our bats. Keep it going Eagles!

Ok, before I go, it's almost halftime at the C-USA tourney. Southern Miss is ahead 30-26. We need some shots.

Oh, my goodness mis ninos! I haven't talked to you all in ages! I really don't like blogging, but for the cheap seats, here it goes. I have been inundated with ridiculous amounts of work recently, and I had to take on a talented and eager young assistant, Rebecca Macias. We both will be editting and devising ways to artfully illustrate the Printz photos. In the mean time, I am looking foward to culminating my career here at the Printz with a big time photo spread. David and I are possibly (if he lets me) trying to do a full color full page portrait of the new school president. (by the way, make sure you call Shelby "Dr.". His staff kinda gets huffy and corrects you if you just call him "Mr.") So, alas, that is all. I have enjoyed the chaos of this year and hope to take all I have done, seen, heard, and learned forward in my future endeavors.

Here we are at the halfway point of my opinion editing career. This strange world of journalism has provided an educating experience.

Before I go, I do want to address some things. There are a few religious topics coming.

Other than that, I reserve alot of space for the outgoing and incoming administration.

So, here we are, the home stretch.

We have about 15 more papers left in my administration - seven weeks or so of The Student Printz.

It's hard to believe 45 papers are behind us, stored away in the archives with all the editions since 1927.

I know this: I've learned more here than I ever expected. But, most of it had nothing to do with journalism.

This is one of those jobs no one can describe to you. Going in, I asked everyone I could what to expect. Most people fumbled with a vague analogy of a traffic cop or proofreader. No one came close.

Soon, a new executive editor will take over my office. So, here is something I wish I had read before I began:

I see my job here as five part.

1. Politician
2. Commander
3. Journalist
4. Propagandizing Marketing Whore
5. Director

As a politician, I shake hands and kiss babies for the Printz. I absorb hatred and serve as a face for dartboards. I grease palms and make deals. I explain comments, field letters to the editor and talk to angry readers on the phone. I go to conferences and speak at events. I refuse or accept interviews with local and national media when we stand out from the crowd because Playboy came to town, or the sex column turns a head. I keep my pulse on the zeitgeist of faculty and students as well as the larger Hattiesburg community and compare everything to the flow of public sentiment in the nation. Where do we fit in? How should we fit in?

As a commander I keep my troops motivated and happy, keeping them on task and getting the best out of them while mindful of morale and mutiny. I maintain the hierarchy of command and insist on my editors doing the same. I hire who I know will make my job easier and can handle the stress of running a newspaper and making grades. But, I also trim the fat and fire those who aren't performing or who need a break. I notice when person-A hates person-B and rearrange things so they don't muck up the operation. I buy pizza.

As a journalist I keep an eye on what people want to know about or should know about, but also must understand students often don't want to read 500 words on the presidential search when they can turn inside and read 350 words about how crappy parking is. I train and motivate the staff to be objective, fair and maintain integrity. Also, I go through the mechanics of the words, style and grammar, which can be overwhelming. We are rarely perfect, but not from lack of trying. I write news stories. I write columns. I cover entertainment. I cover sports on occasion. I interview the parent of a student who died at 22 from an aneurysm and promise her I'll make her proud. Then, on top of all of that, I concern myself with the legality of every single inch of newsprint.

As a propagandizing marketing whore I scour the Internet. I put up fliers. I promote every story I can so it gets the most coverage. I plan headlines, photos, columns and special sections so they get the most eyes turned toward them and the most mouse clicks in their favor. I deal with advertisers and think of ways to get more of them to spend more money. I sacrifice content for them whenever I can. I put games and puzzles in the paper to trick my audience into reading the newspaper. I send people to cover events like the Miss USM pageant, Greek stage performances and spring break plans.

As a director, I plan for the future, tweak performances and seek out funds for projects. I attempt new sections and new features. I decide what sort of layout we will have each edition and ask for what I know I will need to fill it up. I plan illustrations, photos and videos. Then, when everything fails, I solve the problems. I am a flesh and bone switchboard for the entire operation connecting all section to one another and then to the layout staff.

Of course, there's more to it than just these five things. But, maybe this will help anyone out there who is considering the job to see what it's about. Basically, you're running a newspaper. How you go about is up to you. This is just how I did it.

Some things I am working on:

A couple in GA were arested/tried/convicted on child porn charges. They are 16 and 17, the porn they were convicted of producing, was of themselves.

I had a friend who was enterained by a professor and fellow athiest rediculing the religous right, but left in tears when he started bashing enviromentalists. Apparently you can be a "global warming denyer". Eviromentailism has become religion for some and even has its own "passion of the christ"

Hello everyone from the wonderful world of Sports. It is I, your friendly allknowing Sports Editor. Today I update the blog by providing my insight on my job and the world of Southern Miss Sports. First of all, old business. Long time no blog. Sorry. I need staff writers. I have three. Hess is my new assistant, I'm one, and I've recently added a new writer named Brittney I think. Sorry. Bad memory. If you read this and care anything about sports, please come down and chat with me. I'm usually around the Printz office around 11 M and W mornings. If not, talk to Hess. He'll call me. Ok. New business. Sports. Everyone should try their hardest to go out and support their Eagles this week. The basketball team has their final two home games this week and everyone should check them out. As of today, the baseball team is 7-0 and rising. Tomorrow's match with Troy should be a good rematch for the embarassment we faced in the NCAA regionals last year. It's at Troy, so should be a tough match. The team will have a weekday match at SE Louisiana and then will return home for a three day weekend series with ULL. That's Louisiana-Lafayette. Should be good. If all goes according to my evil plan, we will be 12-0 after next Sunday. Perfect. We will make the Super Regionals this year. Mark my words. By the way, if anybody reads this, please comment. Yesterday was among the most fruitful days of my entire life.

Days like yesterday come around rarely. In a single day, all the competing futures you've seen spreading out ahead of you condense into one. How can so many parts of my life converge? How can so many decisions and paths cross at once?

I started the day off by interviewing the evolutionary psychologist and former Harvard professor David Buss. Before I changed my major to journalism, I was a psychology major, and my plan was to eventually go to the University of Texas at Austin to study evolutionary psychology under Dr. Buss. But, at some point, I saw the 12 years of school looming ahead, and my successes so far in writing overwhelmed me and yanked out of that path.

But, I attribute my interest in coming to college in the first place to reading one of David Buss' books, "The Evolution of Desire." My wife even bought for me a David Buss' textbook from UT for Christmas one year. So, I was insanely excited to get the chance to meet with him. I took a class in educational psychology over the summer and saw a poster in the building promising Buss would soon be a forum speaker at USM. So, I made the necessary phone calls to set up the interview as part of a story for the Printz.

We spoke for over an hour. The interview eventually became a conversation, and though he wanted to continue talking over coffee, one of the other professors snatched him away.

The interview was recorded, and I'll write a news story soon.

After this, I called three history professors to enlist their help with an article I am writing for Mental_Floss and headed to the library where I got my hands on the budget books.

The budget books at USM are the public records detailing every employee's salary and where all the money flows withing the institution. I'm returning on Monday to record just about everything into my laptop and then put all the information online at studentprintz.com for public viewing.

Then one of the aforementioned professors called me, and I headed over to the LAB to meet with him. While there, I met with the other professors as well and jotted down ideas.

I then ate lunch with my wife at the Power House and proceeded to the lecture by David Buss in the Thad Cochran Center at USM. I video recorded the entire speech and will host it on studentprintz.com via youtube.com soon.

Finally, I took a few photos and spoke with Buss again, introducing him to Mandy. He gave me a signed copy of his textbook and I headed home.

I compiled all my info for the Mental_Floss article and sent it to the editor.

Then, after writing a new song in Fruity Loops, I grabbed some Shiner and played Warioware on the Wii with my Mandy, Burt and Lynda. Then, some late-night Sonic and sleeping in.

I know, it's been a while since we blogged. But, Christmas break is over and so is SEJC.

Someone coordinated an effort to remove all of our print editions from news stands yesterday. We received calls all day about groups of girls taking whole stacks and dumping them in the garbage or driving off with them.

After hearing about one incident, we ran to the scene and, sure enough, the garbage can nearby contained all of the newpapers supposed to be in the stand.

So, we filed a report with the police (laughable) because the Printz costs 25 cents per issue after the first four per customer.

The bottom line: Some group on campus destroyed approximately 4,000 newpapers. Of course, we know who is responsible and why they did it. But, without proof, we aren't going to reveal this.

Hello Printzers.

Hope everyone has been doing well. Sorry I haven't been updating you but I've been way too busy with everything. Lay off, you'll get your sports. Well, I've got the next four issues planned and am looking to plan the rest of the year. I'm interested in seeing if any of you would like to comment on the contents of the sports page. I'm open to ideas and possible writers. Drop me a line. I'm trying to stay ahead but two labs will kill you. I'm taking a break from a lab report now and will have one I'll work on this afternoon and tonight so I'll be finished with all that. You know how it is. Well, thank God its Homecoming Week! The Eagles are coming home to face the always tough Houston Cougars, who by the way lost to UL-Lafayette this past weekend. We need to keep their losing streak going. So everyone out there buy a ticket and come support your Eagles. Students, your id gets you in for free, so come to the game. That's one of the only free things you'll get (I realize tuition pays for it, but tuition doesn't pay for a lot of things, including wireless, so come to the game and save some money.) Everybody come and MAKE SOME NOISE!!!!!!!!!!

It will help. Anywho, This week look for some cool stuff. Tuesday we'll have a football update, and I will be covering Coach Bower's Press conference. Look for video of the press conference on Monday or Tuesday at studentprintz.com. We'll also have an update on the fall baseball practice, as well as coverage of Sunday's soccer match. Look for all this and more on Tuesday. Thursday we'll have the return of the football insert. Go Gold! I have a pretty good opinion piece in on it and hopefully the insert will be everything we want it to be and more. The back page will feature a special on Damion Carter, one of our star wide receivers, as well as a practice preparation update, and a preview of the Softball team. HOLLER!

So this week has been a very productive week for the entertainment section. We gained two new writers, Tiffany and Vernteze whom you will be seeing shortly in the Printz. My writers and I have mapped out issues for months in advance so we can make sure to get awesome interviews and well rounded stories. I am pushing for more edgy movie/music reviews, but we're in a sort of trial and error stage with that.
Here is what we have planned for this week:
Tuesday: Tuesday, of course, will be music and film reviews. Jessica is reviewing Martin Scorsese's latest film, The Departed. Despite its huge name cast, it has gotten little publicity. We will also have an array of music review including Christian band, Third Day.

Thursday: Thursday is where we really get to have fun with the events and things going on in and around campus. The art museum on campus is opening a new exhibit this week, and Playboy (yes, THE Playboy) is coming to Hattiesburg at the end of the month in search of USM Girls for their May 2007 Conference USA issue. We are also covering a magic show, The Pendragons, who are performing at the Saenger downtown. Lastly, we will have a fun story with a list of fun things to do on campus that you probably thought you weren't allowed to do.

In a nutshell, this week will rock your socks off. Don't miss it.

A considerable part of my job here is to play politician and be a talking head for the newspaper, something I have an atavistic disdain for.

Since I'm in the newspaper business, and I am a journalist, I know just how filtered and skewed the stories can become after going through a few hands.

In the last three weeks, I have been contacted by, or been written about in the following media:

The Romenesko Web Blog (one of the most popular in the world)
American Family Radio
The Trinity Broadcasting Network
The Hattiesburg American
The Sun Herald
The Clarion Ledger
WDAM Channel 7 (NBC affiliate)
The Gallo Radio Show
The JT and Dave Show
Southern Urban Radio Network

All wanted to talk about "Pillow Talk", more specifically, the letter we received from Thames denouncing it.

Of course, all of these media are slow to catch up, and most are only now concerned because the Hattiesburg American not only ran a story, but an editorial (in support of the Printz).

But, it is nifty to see the echo chamber at work, and it is strange to have the tables turned on us.

Knowing how things can be misinterpreted, I have been reluctant to speak with radio and television outlets. But, I am more than happy to talk to print journalists. I trust print journalism, and I believe in it.

Perhaps strangest of all, is the overwhelming support we are receiving for our actions. If Thames had said nothing, who knows where we would be right now. As it is, he has solidified our resolve, and legitimized our operation.

Hello all,
long time no blog. much to my disappointment, Girls Gone Wild refused to talk to the Printz while they were here in Hattiesburg. I got to the club where I was told I could "pay the cover like everyone else" if I wanted to talk to the GGW crew. I asked the bouncer if he understood that I was giving their business FREE publicity by doing this story...so, he let me in. I got ahold of a GGW crew member named "Big"....He gave me a bogus phone number to call and talk to their "legal guy" before they could say ANYTHING. I talked to several people in line to get into Sports Rock Thursday (GGW was there), but everyone refused to allow me to publish their name in the paper. After meandering around the club for about an hour or so and attempting to get some quotes from the crew, girls, and club-goers with NO success, I left. so, that's the bad news.
the good news is that there are several exciting things going on this week such as the Forrest County Fair, Fall Art Walk, as well as the usual weekend shenanigans. Eaglepalooza is coming up as is homecoming. i hope there is some crazyness going on at eaglepalooza,...that would really make my life worth living. we're about due for some exciting entertainment NEWS!!! later :)

So, what are we up to?

Well, the coming issues will begin focusing on the parking problem here at USM. We will compare our situation to other comparable colleges and discuss why the problem still exists, how much it would cost to fix and possible strategies.

We will also be opining on the Master Plan, covering Girls Gone Wild's visit to campus, and Robert F. Kennedy's upcoming lecture.

I was glad to hear students buzzing about the proposed city ordinance that was reported in Tuesday's edition. We'll be covering this issue as it develops throughout the year.

For today's paper, I hope no one misses David McRaney's story about lecturecasting (podcasting) at USM.

As many know, October is breast cancer awareness month, and in our upcoming edition Tuesday, we'll be reporting what events will be going on around campus and in Hattiesburg.

This that time of the semester when all the new recruits realize how good they are at juggling school and extracurricular activities. In our case, the extracurricular work is hefty indeed.

So, if you learn anything at a college newspaper, it's how to manage your time. If you don't, your school work nakes a nose dive, or the paper starts to stagnate.

We just received our new camera, so expect lots more video soon. In fact, we are about to start webcasting Bower's press conference every week.

We had a big meeting with 90 percent of the people who work here last night, and I think we are all on the same page again. I look forward to what comes next.

So school and the paper are finally starting to regulate to where i can map out my time better. I'm getting the hang of this editorial thing, and I wish I could do it next semester, but I fear my classes will comsume too much of my time. On the bright side, my staff is building back up (we went from 5 writers to now 7) and David helped me establish a weekly routine:

Tuesdays: music and movie reviews; focused on non-mainstream music and foreign, documentary,limited access, and otherwise independent films.

Thursdays: regular coverage of upcoming entertainment events.

Once this comes into affect, I feel confident that the section will run smoother. This whole thing has been such a learning experience on so many levels (patience, time management, teamwork, leadership, etc.) I also hope to dabble in opinions a bit and contribute some work to Adam's section. Ive been known to have an opinion or two.

Tomorrows paper should be interesting. It will contain many letters, including an official response from the university and our response.

Lots of TV starts this week, "How I met Your Mother" is on tonight and "Jericho" and "Kidnapped" start Wednesday. Thursday has the incredibly awsome "the office" returning as well as "My name is Earl"

Hi all,

I find it amazing how some students don't read the Printz - or any newspapers for that matter.

I overhear students talking each day about what could happen in a friend's relationship, cell phone plan or weekend party.

But it's rare that I hear students talking about issues on campus, in Mississippi or the United States that will affect them, as well as their friends, cell phone provider and fellow partiers.

I encourage you guys to be mindful of what's happening around you. There's life outside of your social setting.

When I applied for the job of executive editor at The Student Printz, my goals were clear. I wanted to bring The Student Printz up to par with the best college papers in the country. So far, this plan is right on track.

It's hard to run a paper with a rotating student staff. To create something of quality, you really need to work on it full time, which is not a luxury for any of us. The section editors and myself keep putting in overtime and then some. But, I know our core group of contributors will soon settle in and we can begin phase two.

Our staff suffered terrible personal loss; our copy desk was hanging on by a thread; one of our columns generated some trite controversy I've had to handle over the phone; one of our stories deeply hurt someone it intended to help, and I had to handle it over the phone as well. On top of all of this, our entertainment staff has drastically dwindled.

But over the course of all of this, I've become more steadfast in my beliefs and learned how to operate a whole set of programs and processes I never laid hands on before. Every problem that has arisen has been solved. I'm more optimistic now than I was before the first paper.

I'm proud of my staff and our work so far, and I look forward to what comes next.

Holler!!

SoOoOoO I'm pretty much excited about some of the stories and events we have coming up in the next couple weeks.

For Tuesday:
Tuesday we will be covering the online conference held by CEO and President of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg concerning the News Feed addition to facebook. We are also doing a "Students Pick" piece about the best places to eat/party/etc. in Hattiesburg. I will personally be writing a piece about how Southern culture is portrayed in movies. It will be focusing on stereotypes, common misconceptions, and how that image has evolved since the days of, say, Gone With the Wind.

For Thursday:
Second City Comedy Tour is coming to the Saenger theater in downtown Hattiesburg. Second City has been home to many famous comedians like Tina Fey from SNL along with many others. I personally am planning on attending this event Sept. 22. The next story covers the "I Got Booty" pajama contest at local nightclub Sports Rock. I cannot wait to see what this thing is about...

Hi all,

As some of you know, I lost my 36-year-old brother last week after his two-year battle with cancer. It has been the most difficult experience ever, and I thank everyone for their thoughts, concerns and prayers.

I'm back in the office now, and I'm trying to plan some great coverage for the Printz in the upcoming weeks.

For tomorrow's Printz, we'll be covering news surrounding The District and a one-woman storyteller who is going to act out Beowolf on campus later this week.

Well I've hit a bump in the road, and I hope its over. Lost a few writers, but it's probably better that they're doing their own thing now. I guess it was time to do some housekeeping, if you will, within my section.
Now that it's over I plan to keep moving forward mapping out future issues. It was just announced Monday that Eaglepalooza will welcome rapper Chingy and band Sister Hazel this year. I think this will appeal to a VERY diverse crowd...it shall be interesting....

My section has gotten a lot of attention with the addition of the sex column. After reading comments and concerns on various websites I wanted to respond:
Second, the response has been 1/3 positive, 1/3 not "risque" enough and 1/3 negative. Not a SINGLE letter has been sent to printz@usm.edu either.

Also former President McCain, who was such a lover of free speech, that his papers are still sealed, would NOT like this column.

It is NOT pornographic or smut, it is advise for ADULTS. The people who make up this campus.

If you don't like it, don't read it.

I really doubt that this column will make people who are "abstaining" run out and have sex. I really doubt it will lead to rape either.

I do not fear Bill O'Reilly, but I would rather talk to Glenn Beck given the choice.

And yes, her parents are proud of her.

I am very happy with the upcoming issues I have planned. We have some really cool events coming up right here in the burg (who knew??). I'm especially excited for "THEM" to announce who is coming to Eaglepalooza so we can get started on that as well. Some of the entertainment stories coming up include the Reel South Film Festival, Silent Films @ the Saenger, Second City Comedy Tour, and a piece about how Southerners and Southern culture is portrayed in films.
With football season starting, the parties will be endless....the entertainment will flow like beer at the games....it will be glorious. See you there.

My section is great. We welcomed two new writers this week and Pillow Talk is generating tons of positive feedback. I was glad to see them make a good entrance into the Printz. It is important to make a good entrance, whenever possible try it like this:

Crime.

With less police officers, more violent and criminal acts and a higher crime rate, students and residents can't be safe enough in Hattiesburg.

I am back in my luxurious dormroom typing away for Thursday's issue. I must say...this is the most stressed I've been about an issue so far. Two of my stories are pushing the deadline a little too much which makes me nervous. But the good news is that we have an interview with Whild Peach...the backup band for Outkast!!
I am pretty proud of that and proud of the writer, David for taking it on. We also have the Vanilla Ice story, Art Walk 2006, and a story on We Landed on the Moon! who is coming to the Burg this weekend. Whew, I got frazzled just writing that all out.

Today, however, my heart is troubled. Why? Because our good Aussie friend, Steve Irwin (The Crocodile Hunter) bit the dust over the weekend. Ironically, it was not a "croc" that got him....it was a stingray. It stung him right in his Australian Crocodile-loving heart. How crazy is that?? It's a little eerie if you ask me. Anyway, my sympathies go out to his family and his fellow croc-hunting friends.

Hi guys!
I am at my grandmother's house for the Labor Day weekend. I don't think she knows what "internet" is because I had to travel 7 miles to the nearest WiFi hot spot.
Anyway, let's get to it. The next few issues should be picking up in content. We are working on a lot of awesome stuff that I mentioned in my last blog.
I have decided to use this blog as an outlet for me to vent my feelings on Grey's Anatomy. This will not begin, of course, until the season begins AT 8PM ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 21!!! It is my love,my life, my heart....sad as it may be. Anyway, woohoo excited about that.

We will have a special insert in the next edition covering the first home game. Also, I'm working on getting the paper up to 10 pages because it looks like advertising is coming in heavy once again. This is good, it means people are catching on to how good the paper is.

But, with a color insert already in the paper, going to 10 might be too expensive. We will see. Regardless - Vanilla and the Ode to the Commons will make it in.

We've also received some privileged information about the death of T.J. Thomas that may shock some people.

Hi all,

First, let me say my heart goes out to the many friends of T.J. Thomas. I too have been where you are now, and I too have asked the same questions and felt the same sadness you've expereienced this week. But I've also shared in the memories of a lost friend - memories that old age and time will never be able to steal.

I was surprised to receive e-mails and messages through Facebook thanking me for the story about T.J. in Tuesday's Printz. It was so touching to know that the story - which was the least I could do for him, his family and his friends - was so very much appreciated by those who knew and loved him. It amazes me how people can unknowingly touch lives through the simplest of acts such as a smile or kind word.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the Printz this week, and I wish you all a fabulous Labor Day break.

As I lay dying of whatever "crud" is going around campus, my last wish is to post this blog about the printz. David is right, we have an unbelieveable staff this semester which is such a blessing. my writers are great and receptive to new ideas which is more than I could ask for.
I had the opportunity to go to the Silent Witness art show opening this week. I must say it was really great to meet the artists and talk to everyone affiliated with the exhibition. It's amazing how much work goes into these things.
Seems like everyone is working really hard around here. Labor Day is much needed. :)

Wow, this edition went so smoothly, I don't know what to say. The staff is really pulling together and proving to be one of the best ever.

We won't print on Tuesday. But, Thursday's issue will be devoted to crime in Hattiesburg. Also, expect a story about Robert Van Winkle aka Vanilla Ice.

One last note. I recieved a book from a local author claiming to be a former professor in Biloxi. The book seems to be an allegory concerning the events surrounding the Thames controversy of legend. More to come...

A USM student died Saturday in a car wreck. The details are sketchy, some sources are saying it came as the result of a police chase, and the student was struck by the car being pursued. But, that's just a rumor for now. Still, you can read our paper for details.

Yesterday was tough. Step throat has bloomed on campus, and half our staff had it. Our photo editor mucked through, but our copy desk chief ended up in the hospital.

We had to backwards engineer a handful of tasks he is an expert at.

So, we were at the Printz offices till 11 p.m., and to make things worse, our printers (the paper is printed under contract off campus) somehow screwed up and did not print the paper. So, it won't hit the racks till noon today.

Still, the website is up for this edition. We will also have a new video up sometime today showing the Gulf Coast Campus as it looks today.

We keep hearing rumors that an epidemic number of students have strep throat and the clinic is overrunning. This poses a few problems for us.

Under FERPA, we can't reveal anything about a student that violates his or her right to keep medical records private. So, we need to contact the clinic and just get some information about what students should be doing and whether or not there is an outbreak.

But, getting the clinic on the phone isn't easy.

So, maybe we'll have a story - but not unless we talk to someone official.

Hola poodles! I am pleased with the first issue but even more anxious to come out with new ones! There is so much going on in Hattiesburg... i would list some of the stories we are working on but things change/update so frequently, i would hate to speak too soon. anyway, i am so happy with my awesome staff and am always open to suggestions as far as story ideas,heads up on events, etc. I find myself totally consumed with all-things-printz lately, and I hope to develop a steady routine soon. It should be easier to find balance now that my classes have begun and I know my definite schedule. anyway, I am rambling as I often do...please feel free to speak up and let us know how we're doing and what we could be doing better! USM is charging students to use Web CT, the web-based program for getting assignments, turning them in, getting notes and such.

How is USM remembering Katrina on year later?

What is the future of outsourcing at USM, and what is the history?

Also, we will have a video story from the Gulf Coast Campus concerning it's progress in rebuilding.

Starting off the semester by pulling off a 12-page paper with a new staff and a new website was hard, but I think we pulled it off and then some.

Hello all!! I am so excited to have the opportunity to be the editor of our brand new entertainment section. I have been working for over a month putting this section together so that it will be easy for anyone to find out what's happening in Hattiesburg. We are including all things entertainment such as music,movies,art,videogames, resteraunts,bars, and nightclubs (to name a few).
Today I have spend the last 6 hours working on putting the finishing touches on the first issue. I still have more work to do!! I don't mind though because everyone is going to use this section as their "guide" to Hattiesburg nightlife. There is so much going on, and so little space to put it all! Welcome to a new phase of the Printz!

As news editor, my goal is to keep students informed about what's happening on campus and in the community.

In our first edition Thursday, you can read about my interview today with Dr. Shelby F. Thames, who is preparing to end his final term as our president. Thames talked about his past decisions, future plans and hopes for the university's next president.

You can also have an inside look into the new Thad Cochran Center, as well as other high-dollar projects that are in the works. Could you imagine no longer eating in the Commons but listening to lectures in high-tech classrooms? It could happen.

Welcome to the official blog of The Student Printz, USM's campus newspaper. I'm the executive editor of the paper, and I can't wait for everyone to see what we've done with the Printz.

Right now I'm designing the flag, or the logo, for the website, helping the entertainment editor get the calendar together, calling back and forth with the web editor to get our video and blog up, editing the opinions columns, writing a news story about parking, meeting with the cartoonist to establish deadlines and approving photographs.

Earlier this morning I edited together our first video element for the website and contacted Dierk Bentley's management for a press kit.

So, altogether, it's a busy day. But, I want this paper to blow people away who were accustomed to the old paper.

This blog is to help provide transparency for the operation. I feel that the media often attempts to hide the inner workings of their production. So, think of this as self-reporting.
